In professional practice this semester, the class had the opportunity to visit design firms and various showrooms in Atlanta. This was a great experience that allowed us to tour firms and enlighten us with basic knowledge of the design industry. It also enabled us see different size firms and how each firm varies in terms of size. We got to visit the Interface Flor Showroom, TVS Design, Gensler, Cooper Carry, Herman Miller Showroom and ASD Design Firm. This opportunity was very beneficial to students before applying for jobs and entering the professional world. I found it amazing how design school and working in a firm parallel in so many ways. The same process and the same strategies are utilized in a school environment as well as a work environment. I now feel more confident and prepared when job searching, I believe the professors in the Interior Architecture department have familiarized us well with the professional world.

The requirements for this project were to attend two professional networking events within the Piedmont Triad, or surrounding areas. I attended a lecture presented by the NC Triad Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and a lecture series sponsored by The Antique and Design Center at the High Point Furniture Market. At the first event, Jack Davis, Dean of Architecture at Virginia Tech, presented innovative strategies that the architecture program at VA Tech values. The second event was very beneficial and allowed for many networking connections. The speaker talked about the importance of social media and its relevance to design professionals. Both events were insightful as a future designer.

The group marketing project was assigned to give us an insight on firm-oriented marketing strategies. It allowed us to get a basic understanding of the requirements necessary when marketing for a design firm. Mock firms were created and the students were assigned a firm. Included in this project was a branding document with graphic and logo, business cards for firm partners, a brochure explaining the basics of the firm, organizational charts, a business plan, firm summary document and a You Tube video introducing firm members. This enabled us get experience in a collaborative work environment and recognize the importance of good marketing strategies.

This assignment asked us to research a relevant issue that interests us in the design world. Because sustainability is a practice which every designer should exercise, I chose to research and propose the importance of sustainability. I focused on a variety of important aspects including natural energy, materialization, LEED accreditation, recycling and the benefits of sustainable design. This assignment allowed us to gain knowledge in a aspect of design which we were interested in knowing more about. This paper introduced me to new ideas which I can adopt in future projects.

This project began in the beginning of the semester. Our studio entered the "Come Sit a Spell" contest which was to design a seating element for the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Charlotte, North Carolina. Later in the semester the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden faculty selected our whole studio and provided our studio with an opportunity to build our proposed design which would be placed in a 6 month exhibit in the Garden.

When designing the floor plan for these loft apartments, natural light and circulation were particularly important to us. All of our hallways our ten feet wide, for circulation purposes and to get away from the average hallway. Skylights are placed above our hallways for natural light to come into our space and give it an open feel. We did not want the columns to interfere with our individual units, so the coulmns are placed in our hallways. The columns in the hallways also provides interest and to follow the grid of the structure. All but 7 units have access to exterior, when designing this floor plan it was important to have both an exterior and interior entrance for the units. The skylights will also provide natural sunlight to those 7 units that do not have access to outside.

For my individual unit, which is placed on the left side of the plan, in the long rectangular space, my concept is urban exposure. For phase two of this project I have chosen to do the universal unit . I wanted a very open space, the only walls are in the bathroom and a single wall dividing the back entrance from the bedroom. With the long shape of this unit, this did face a challenge for me, but I made sure when designing this space there is a 5' turning radius in all open areas in the plan. To help with natural light, there would be skylights along the east and west wall in my individual unit. Adjacent to these skylights are clearstory windows for more natural lighting.

For my individual unit, I wanted to use exposed materials to preserve the history and character of the building. I wanted open riser stairs with a steel stringer as support. I wanted steel stairs with concrete filled pans. The tread thickness is 1 1/2" thick, the tread is 1' deep and 3' wide. The riser is 7 1/2" tall and there is a 1 1/2" tread overhang as seen in the plan view.

White laminate counters are chosen for a clean modern feel.

Polished concrete floors are used throughout the unit, to follow my concept of "urban exposure". The existing structure already has concrete flooring, so keeping the budget in mind, these floors would just need to be polished. Concrete is a low maintenance and sustainable material, suitable for the XY generation.

Following my concept, I chose aluminum baseboards for a clean and exposed feel.

Walking through my space begining with the front doors, to the left is the dining area with kitchen and to the right is the living room. Across from the kitchen is the laundry area and storage. In the back of the unit is the master suite. It is blocked off by a sliding door, to divide the space, but still make circulation easy for my clients. Most of the storage in this unit is built into the walls for a clean and easily accessible design.

In my kitchen I have a dropped ceiling with aluminum panels for an exposed feel and to make this space more intimate. In the private area, located in the back of the apartment I have also dropped my ceilings. These ceilings would be sheetrock with acoustic paneling inside them to help block sound in the master suite. Because the floor needed to be the same level throughout, I played with the ceiling height to add interest and to separate the different areas. This plan view is cut 8' above the floor, so the dropped ceiling is not shown for a more legible plan.

The exterior entrance is ground level, for easy access to my clients. Pushing and pulling the exterior creates a personalized entry and privacy to these clients. perspective of kitchen and dining area:

The exposed brick wall is along the west wall in the apartment. The color chosen is to help warm up the space, with all the aluminum and steel present in this unit, it was important to add color.

Track lighting is used in the kitchen, and above the dining table, a pendant light will be hung to add interest to the tall ceilings.

The dropped ceiling gives this area an exposed, but personal feel. The aluminum paneling allows light to come through to the kitchen. These apartments can be personalized according the persons disability, but a bar with no cabinets underneath allows a wheelchair to easily roll under.perspective of bathroom:

For the bathroom I wanted a clean and bright space. Same as I mentioned earlier, wheelchairs are able to roll under this sink.

To help filter the sunlight and for acoustic reasons I dropped the ceiling in the private area of this unit. To still allow natural light in, and to add interest, I created a cut out pattern on the ceiling in the bedroom. The closet space is built into the wall for easy circulation. Aside from the natural light, recessed lighting is mainly used in the private area.

In the living room I have built in storage, which allows a spot for the TV as well as storage for my clients. I wanted a small, living room for a cozy, intimate feel. Recessed lighting is used in the living room along with a lot of natural light from the exterior.

For this project I wanted to base my design around the Japanese bathing culture. After researching, I found that the Japanese had a very systematic and organized way to bathe. Not only was it an actual cleansing of the body but it was also a spiritual cleansing process. Due to the simplicity of Japanese design, the floor plan is a simple geometric shape. Since this space is handicapped accesible, circulation and flow was very important to me. I wanted it to be easy for them to mauever around the space, which is the reason for the straight ramps and open pathways.
In this spa I wanted the Japanese culture to be reflected. There is an undefined path to follow to lead you to the pool. The pattern in the floor will guide you around the space. First you would change (a dressing room is present for both males and females). You would then proceedto the foot bath and clean your feet. After that you go to the shower where you clean your body. The cleansing process cleans your body of dirt and oil and to prevent contamination in the pool. Finally you would proceed into the pool where you clean your spirit and relax. The pool area is oriented to the west for a picturesque view of the sunset.
This spa is very relaxing and open to the outdoors. The scenic views and use of natural materials make this a perfect spot to clear your mind. Japanese incorporated natural materials into many of their designs which is why I chose to use stone, bamboo, teak wood, and terra cotta tiles for the pool in this space.

Fiji is my inspiration for this project. I love the bath looking over the scenic view and the idea of openness. I like the wood shutters which also provides privacy if desired. Some codes for wheelchair accesibility according to ADA.

I like the slate wall, I think it would be very interested to incorporate a waterfall onto this wall for tranquility.

This my first time experimenting with adobe illustrator. I believe I should have picked a simple photograph to begin with so I could focus more on the details. This image had so many buildings and things going on it was hard to get it how I wanted it, the foreground does not have as much detail as I would have liked it to. I should have added more shadows to the windows and changed the building colors in the distance to give the appearance of depth.

Our first assignment on photoshop was to create a victorian inspired pattern from an urban landscape. Victorian patterns tend to be organic and repetitive, which is why I chose this curved highway. This picture was originally of an Japanese city. After cropping a part out of the image and altering it in several ways, this was the final product.

In response to the article, I must say I found this information to be informative to the history of computer programs. Due to technological advances, many improvements and explorations have been discovered since Renaissance times. Although the Vitruvian man did give designers and architects a better understanding of the human body and its proportions, there was still a large gap between estimation and precision. Another advancement was the introduction of perspective drawings. This gave designers a way to put their ideas in space, including scale figures helped to see the proportions of different objects in a spacial layout they have created. This 2-D method made it possible to see the space in a 3-D sort of way.

Continuing to improve methods of designing, CAD was introduced, and soon began to appear in architectural firms. The first generation CAD systems contained many limitations, such as large and powerful computers, costly equipment and was considered a program generally only used as a "building design system". While CAD programs are improving, architects are able to use this program for not only drafting, but renderings as well to help better communicate their designs to their clients. This second generation CAD system dealt with polygons, solids, NURBS and "blobs" (as opposed to already created stairs, doors, etc.) which made this program more versatile. The third generation CAD continues to improve, using object oriented designs and staying away from the geometrical forms used in the second. Third generation systems were similar to the first in a way that the architectural objects intended to support the design. The advancements in the third generation systems included object-oriented programming, artificial intelligence and database management systems.

These brilliant and innovative virtual programs have created advancements and opportunities for designers that were never imaginable. These programs have improved extensively since the 1970's and are continuing to improve today. It is hard to imagine what these programs will become in the next few years. With almost effortless applications on the computer, as a future designer I feel knowledge in both hand renderings and computer aided drawings will be necessary to succeed in this field.

At first, we were very overwhelmed because there are many different codes for certain things. We had a hard time understanding that proxemics and ergonomics were not codes, but they are standards of comfort. It is a little scary not knowing if we are abiding by the codes correctly. Once we looked into codes, proximics and ergonomics, our design changed in order to make our bus handicap accessible.

We would recommend that designers keep in mind that every public space needs to be accessible to handicap people. Everyone needs to be able to get to every corner of a space and reach needed heights. This past couple weeks, we have really learned that our design for a space is not supposed to be just pleasing to the eye, but should really serve as something for people who are using it to interact with.

Codes help in design because they give a basis, or a general idea of the minimum amount of space needed to walk around etc. for your design. However, they also pose as a limitation because the design may change after the realization that people with lesser ability are unable to utilize the space.

Codes will change our work as a designer because the design must conform to different standards and regulations. It will be nice once we know some of the codes and standards by memory, so that we, as designers, can keep this information retained in our mind while designing the first model.

Models: Part 111

Avalanches are very unexpected occurrences. Because of this, we provided different models for different times of the natural disaster. It was of our interest to develop a way to prevent an avalanche, to create a structure for warning the public of the danger, to have a place for people to go during the disaster, and to provide a way to easily get the victims help as soon as possible. Below are our models to help victims out in this natrual disaster:

Not only did we want to pay attention to pre and post avalanche disaster, but we also wanted to make sure there was some sort of place that would provide safety during an avalanche. This cement structure would be a place where people on the mountain could ski etc. to when the avalanche is headed their way.

One problem with avalanches is that it is very difficult to find the victims. The search and rescue team must get up the mountain very quickly along with their equipment and search dogs. The structure would be on a belt that would make it have mobility, much like a ski mobile.

This structure is a source of information for the public. Each color is a different danger level, and will be displays accordingly.

In order to prevent an avalanche, we designed a fence that would make it so the snow was packed between each row. In doing this, the snow would be unable to break off and float down the slope.

Interview: Part 1

1st interview...At the bus stop we started talking to two UNCG students who were waiting on the bus as well. Andre explained to us that he was a student who lives on campus and rides the bus to get around town. Since he is a freshman he has only been on the bus a couple of times on the bus this year. Altough he is not a regular he has noticed that he has had to wait a while for the bus to come and pick him up as well as drop him off at his destination.To view video of interview, go to Hannah's blog

2nd interview...We interviewed a second person at the bus stop. Her name was Eno and is from Ghana. She did not want to be videotaped but did not mind being interviewed. She is also a student at UNCG and lives off campus. If she does not walk to school, she rides the bus. She told us that she sometimes feels uncomfortable and awkward on the bus. While getting on the bus she mentioned that another problem was how confusing the bus routes are. For people who don't ride the bus very often or don't live around here, the bus system is lacking communication.

3rd interview...While on the bus we met an elderly lady who has been a regular on the bus for 14 years. Her name was Ramona Ingram. We asked her if we could videotape her, but she declined. She rides the bus to work everyday except on the weekends. She would very much apprciate a bus stop with a shelter or overhang to prevent her from inclement weather, since she waits for the bus for 30 minutes everyday. She likes riding the bus and it is a very helpful mean of transportation since she does not have a car.

4th interview...The last people we interviewed started talking to us first which made it easier to ask questions. We found out that Nathan and his friends don't regularly ride the bus, but since their car broke down the bus is very convient. Since gas prices rose, the GTA is a good alternative to get around. The other guy(name not given) wasn't as positive about GTA as Nathan. He told us "GTA is a very unorganized and a bad service". He also said that the bus drivers are already at work and are careless to others who are trying to get to work on time.

One of the concerns in our analysis was to make sure there was visibility of the surrounding area so that you can see if the bus is coming while you are sitting in the shelter.CIRCULATION & USE:
There is little seating for bus passengers in the shelter we observed. Even though there is room for four people on one seat, only two people tend to occupy one bench because of its awkwardness. we also want to consider making a space for people who are handicap and need a wheel chair.
REPETITIVE & UNIQUE:
As noticed by many other groups, it was very hot in the park and ride shelter. We want to o create ceiling that does not obsorb heat, as well as make an open space that has good ventilation.
NATURAL LIGHT & ARTIFICIAL LIGHT:
We wanted to make sure that there was natural light, as well as light from either nearby light post or installed light into the structure.
TECTONIC & MECHANIC:
Another topic we want to address is how the shelter contacts the ground. This shelter has legs that are bolted onto the ground.

This was a group project that we did the first week of school. The reason for the shape of this model was the nodes were represented by circles. We decided to make 3D objects, the materials used were representing of something else. The Black was used to represent an iron statue and the gray was used to represent concrete. The node I picked was the Nathaniel Greene statue in downtown Greensboro.

The bus ride on GTA was very eventful. Although not in my original plans I rode the bus two times. The first bus we caught was Route number 2 at 3:05 on Tate Street in front of Jimmy Johns. As Ashleigh, Chelsey and I boarded the bus we realized Hannah D. was using the bathroom and was not back yet. We politely asked the bus driver to wait a minute for a friend, to our surprise we were off, without Hannah. There were quite a few people in the bus, but empty seats as well. We headed off to the bus depot downtown. Looking a lot like tourists, we were snapping many pictures along the way, which of course came with many nasty glares from the fellow bus riders. They looked annoyed with us. After departing the bus depot downtown, we headed back towards campus we were dropped off on Tate Street in front of the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
Since Hannah missed the bus the first time I volunteered to go along with her for ride number 2. We decided to take the 6:05 bus departing from Tate in front of Jimmy Johns, once again. We left early to make sure we caught it, while crossing Tate Street at 5:50; we see the bus leaving the bus stop fifteen minutes early. From the previous ride, I had some knowledge of the bus routes. We decided to aboard the bus where I had gotten off last time, in front of the Art Museum and take a ride to Four Seasons. After waiting what seemed like hours we got on the bus. We got on and were first reprimanded by the bus driver for entering through the wrong door; although the entrance was not distinguishable when two doors open. We barely found two seats on the bus, it was packed full and we were most definitely outcasts. While sitting in complete awkwardness we decided to introduce ourselves to two young girls in front of us. They were friendly girls, who attended UNCG as well. Everyone who was on the bus got off at Four Seasons Mall, so Hannah and I had the whole bus to ourselves. We got off once again, at Tate Street.
This whole experience was not much different than I had anticipated, but it did help me realize that the community is doing a lot for the citizens without means of transportation. It is a system that does much assistance for the society.
After reading Civilities and Civil Rights on blackboard it opens your mind to a whole new idea of racism. It is appalling to read that only 28 years ago there was so much discrimination right here in this same city. It is very eye opening. The justice the courts have decided dealing with equal rights and desegregation is now very much appreciated. Perhaps the most shocking thing to me was the extremity of racism shown right here in schools and amenities in Greensboro. The racism present in the 1960’s was obvious and unjust. The segregation of schools and public facilities is now fixed. When comparing the reading to our journey they were quite different. When getting on the bus yesterday (both times) they only seats available were seats in the back of the bus, so that is where we sat. Naturally, many things have changed. Although the sit-ins did not bring immediate victory to the Greensboro community, it did help them get through the struggle.

first week of class

Aside from the chaos of figuring out your schedule and getting back into the swing of things, the first week of classes was somewhat relieving. The transition from first year to second year was smooth and organized. The first week was an idea of what this year will be about, what we will be learning and how we will go about learning new things.
The meaning of collaboration will become significant as we go through this year. We will learn how to work with others, colleagues and clients, as well as learn to meet deadlines. The exercises given in the first week of classes were helpful to ‘break the ice’ for the coming school year, we worked by ourselves, with groups and also with the whole class. There are many new students that joined IARC this year, first year as well as transfer students. The way we worked together this first week helped us to get to know the transfer students, we were also introduced to what they have learned and brought with them from previous colleges. The idea of teamwork will be a very important part to this semester to help us prepare for future projects.
During the first week of school, we worked on way finding. We payed close attention to our environment to learn new routes and distinguish landmarks. The project helped us chart out our course to arrive at our destination. Way finding is an idea that will be prominent all semester. We will branch off of this project and learn many new things during the course of this semester.

This was a sketch up exercise we did of our model with specific dimensions. The tile floor is a little different due to minimal materials on sketch up. I could not get my tile size or tile color right but everything else is accurate and the same scale as my model.

Bottle Caps: Part II

The Process to our final design:

After concluding that our dinnerware was not very efficient for the consumer, we pondered upon the idea of what light would look like shining through the bottle caps.
Our first idea was to make some sort of lamp shade, but it was not exactly eco-friendly because you still were using resources that weren't completely natural.
We then turned to the sun as our light source, and thought that the light shining through the bottle caps produced a glow that was aesthetically pleasing.

That's how our final design of a recycled stained glass window developed.

We didn't want to stick with the ordinary, rectilinear shape of a stained glass window. After experimenting with different shapes we thought that the diamond was the most appealing and easiest to hang.
We first concentrated on the individual bottle caps shapes. The way that we made the unique shape of the bottle caps was by cutting slits that were evenly spaced around the rim. We then pulled each individual tab apart to create the flower appearance. To connect the bottle caps we poked thumbtack holes into the caps and used biodegradable fishing line to connect them tightly.
However, just the fishing line alone was not sturdy enough to hold the structure as tightly as we wanted. To fix the problem of the string not being strong enough, we had to add wire to the back of the structure to act like a spine. This seemed to do the trick!
Now, to hang the stain glass window we added string to the top bottle cap and hung it on a suction cup that could be easily placed in any window.

Bottle Caps: Part I

First Iteration of Bottle Cap project:

When we were first informed about the bottle cap project we wanted to design something that could be reproduced quickly and easily. We thought that if it were made more simple it would have a better chance of actually becoming a product that could be mass produced.
We came up with a drinking glass and a bowl. However, this idea was not very realistic or efficient. There were spaces in between each bottle cap, which made the product not functional.
We had to think of a different design that could be both functional and efficient for the consumer. While still keeping in mind, something that could be easily reproduced.

This project was of orthographic views of a desk/work area we have created. Using minimal space and materials, this compact desk has storage, seating and a work area. When sketching this, I realized my drawings were to big to fit the proper way on the paper so I had to put my "west" view on the top row.

self sustaining system

This self sustaining system was made out of an 18'' two by four. I chose this out of all of my ideas because is was simple yet sustainable. My inspiration was a tree, with roots and a tree top and the notches between serve as tree limbs.
